Teaching life skills to children
In this session, we will discuss the notion of life skills in relation to children who are learning English as part of their compulsory education. We will look at why life skills are important and how to integrate them into the learning process. A model for teaching life skills will be presented and we will explore a range of practical ideas to develop key areas such as intercultural competence, learner autonomy, values education, thinking skills, collaborative learning, and respect for diversity. The main focus will be on activities and procedures that are easy to adapt and implement in your own classroom.
Learning through content in primary ELT
Lessons and units of work based on content from other areas of the curriculum help to make learning engaging and memorable. In this session, we will explore different approaches to integrating content in primary ELT, including the use of stories, topic-based learning, and ‘borrowing’ content-based activities from other areas of the curriculum, which can be used to enrich an existing language syllabus. The main focus of the session will be on practical ideas to incorporate real content into our teaching. We will do and discuss a range of multi-sensory activities for different ages and levels and consider the benefits of each one.
